How to Help Your Child With Common Diabetes-Related Conditions

If you have a son or daughter who’s living with diabetes, there are things that you can do as a parent to help your child manage many of the related symptoms and other conditions that can arise from this disease. Doing everything that’s needed to ensure optimal health can help your child live a better life with fewer complications. Here are a few ways that you can help your child when it comes to common diabetes-related conditions.

Schedule Regular Eye Exams

Taking your diabetic child to the eye doctor for an examination at least once a year will be especially important since the disease can negatively impact eyesight. A condition known as diabetic retinopathy can damage the retina of the eyes, which can cause severe vision loss if left untreated. Diabetic retinopathy can be asymptomatic for some time and still cause damage, and symptoms might not be noticeable until the condition has progressed to a more advanced stage. Diabetic macular edema is another condition that your child may be susceptible to and is caused by swelling in the eyes.

Provide Compression Socks

These types of socks are made to apply pressure to the lower legs and feet by gently squeezing foot and calf muscles. One of the main benefits of compression socks is that they improve circulation in the lower extremities, which is especially important if your child has diabetes. If your child is conscious about style, both of you can rest assured that many of today’s compression socks feature fashionable designs that sometimes look even better than regular socks.

Give Immune-Boosting Vitamins

A strong immune system is crucial with diabetes, and taking the right vitamins can help fight infections and other complications of the disease. B vitamins, folate and other water-soluble vitamins often get flushed from diabetics’ systems faster, so you may need to increase the uptake of these vitamins for your child to ensure optimal immune health. Fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D and E, can also boost your child’s immune system.

Start Yoga

Yoga is one of the best physical activities for children who have diabetes because of its ability to improve strength and flexibility without putting too much strain on the body. Many of the yoga poses can also decrease blood pressure and blood sugar levels while enhancing circulation. Since heart disease is more common among diabetics, the lower blood pressure that results from doing yoga can help prevent the condition.

It’s possible for your child to live a life with fewer health complications even while living with diabetes. Implementing the right preventative methods may save your child from having to deal with other medical problems that could worsen their diabetes symptoms.
