Noteworthy Things to do With Family in South Carolina

South Carolina is a wonderful place to visit on vacation. Many activities invite families to come to explore them, so every family will find one or more things to do in South Carolina.

Rafting on the Chattooga National Wild & Scenic River

One activity that you may want to consider is whitewater rafting on the Chattooga National Wild and Scenic River. You can divide this 40-mile long river in the northwest part of the state into two parts. Those who have experience with whitewater rafting will want to test their skills on the upper 21 miles of the river while those with young children and inexperienced rafters will want to limit their exploration to the lower 19 miles. The lower part of the Chattooga National Wild and Scenic River contains 20 rapids. Still, it also has many more quiet places that run alongside red and white oak, birch trees, magnolia trees, and mountain laurel thickets, which makes this a beautiful backdrop for families looking for a natural getaway spot.

Explore History and Nature at the Coastal Discovery Museum

Located in Hilton Head, South Carolina, the Coastal Discovery Museum offers families a chance to step back in time to when the Low Country was undeveloped. In the children’s room, parents and children can see and feel Native American pottery, loggerhead turtle fossils, seashells, and many other things. They can also interact with horseshoe crabs and terrapin while learning more about them from the period-costumed interpretive guides. Then, they receive a scavenger map, allowing them to explore the property containing four historic buildings and beautiful gardens. In the spring, families can also watch a webcam showing the activities occurring inside bluebird nests on the property.

Zipline Over the Catawba River

While participants must weigh at least 75 pounds, ziplining over the Catawba River is a thrilling family-fun activity. Start by climbing a 70-foot tower to access the first zipline. On the short course, participants will ride on at least four more ziplines allowing them to view the river forest as they fly through the air. If families choose the long course, then they can ride on nine zip lines as they travel across the Catawba River. Supportive guides will instruct every member of the family at this course that was built by a professional company and meets the most stringent safety requirements.

Climb Through Eddie at EdVenture

Your children will adore a visit to EdVenture in Columbia, South Carolina, where they can climb through Eddie, who stands over 40 feet tall while learning all about the human body. Each member of the family will engage with Eddie based on their age with those under four working on motor development, those between four and seven work on understanding more about body parts, and older children explore spatial awareness. Besides Eddie, EdVenture has many other family-focused activities, including flying in a flight simulator, caring for stuffed pets at the pet clinic, creating artwork, and pretending to be a firefighter on a full-size firetruck.

Climb Onboard War Ships at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

At Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, families can climb onboard three ships from different periods in U.S. navy history. They can also view a Civil War cannon along with military helicopters. Special age-appropriate activities help children feel like they are in flight school preparing for a space mission. You are unlikely to hear “I’m bored,” come out of your child’s mouth as each activity offers hands-on learning opportunities for the whole family.

Cool Off at Myrtle Waves Water Park

The Myrtle Waves Water Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is a great place to beat the summer heat and humidity. Young children will love playing with the buckets that dump water while older children and adults will enjoy the thrill of twisting water slides. The Lazy River is a delightful place to relax and soak in the warm water. Rockin’ Ray stimulates surfing conditions as you ride a halfpipe.

Riverbanks Zoo

When you are searching for things to do in Columbia, South Carolina, your whole family will enjoy a visit to the Riverbanks Zoo. See over 2,000 animals at this zoo that has been delighting families since 1974. View animals from around the world before heading to the Riverbanks Farm, where children can have up-close encounters with alpacas, barn owls, and goats. While this is just one of the many fun things to do in the Lake Murray Country area, it is one that will leave your family telling stories of the fun they had on this adventure for a very long time.

South Carolina is a great state to explore. Explore it with your family very soon.
